Our story

Built for the way real products get made

Tarmac was founded in Minneapolis in 2012. Software teams kept running into the same problem: product work is spiky. It surges when a launch is close, then quiets down, then surges again. Traditional agencies and rigid enterprise consultancies were built for neither the spikes nor the long haul.

So we built something different. A Team as a Service model, where senior, multidisciplinary teams plug directly into a client’s team, scale up or down as the work demands, and stay for the long term. No body-shop hand-offs. No account manager an ocean away. Just experienced people who own the outcome and communicate every single day.

More than a decade later, that model has delivered 150+ projects for 86+ clients, from venture-backed startups to enterprises. And 85% of the new work still arrives through a referral, which is the clearest proof we know that the approach works.

We are still independent and founder-led, and that shapes more than it sounds like it should. It means the only way Tarmac grows is for the last team we sent to be good enough that someone spends their own credibility introducing us to the next client. Nobody outside this company sets our utilization targets or our headcount plan. So when we tell you a team is right for the work, there is no one upstream who benefits from us telling you something else.
