GovDocs: shipping compliance software 2× faster

The challenge

GovDocs helps large employers stay on top of employment-law compliance, a domain where accuracy and reliability are not optional. The St. Paul company wanted to ship more product, faster, without loosening the quality bar that its customers depend on. It needed senior engineering capacity that would move at speed and communicate as one team.

What we did

Tarmac formed a blended team, roughly 50/50 internal and external, that worked as a single unit alongside GovDocs. We built across a modern stack of Node, React, and Kotlin, with AWS Lambda and MongoDB underpinning the services. Daily communication, shared code ownership, and the Tarmac 10 kept the two halves of the team fully synchronized, so quality and velocity moved together rather than against each other.

The results

GovDocs delivered quality software roughly twice as fast, without trading away the reliability its compliance customers require. The tight synchronization between the internal and external engineers became a core part of how the company ships.
